Help with payment

Could insurance help pay for care?

US care · As of September 2026

What does the insurance plan need to confirm?

Ask which specific product is proposed and why the clinician would prescribe it. Ask what you would pay and whether the clinician needs approval before the prescription is filled.

A plan calls its list of medicines covered for payment a formulary. With prior authorization, the plan must approve payment before you receive the medicine.

Eligibility for coverage does not promise payment from any particular plan.

What is the ordinary Medicare rule?

The Medicare part that helps pay for prescription medicines is Part D.

As of September 2026, drugs used for weight loss remained excluded from ordinary Part D coverage.

Part D may help pay when the same medicine is used for a different accepted health problem, including diabetes. The plan’s own rules still apply.

What is Medicare’s temporary weight-loss programme?

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge offers temporary help with weight-loss medicine costs to some Medicare members. GLP-1 is a hormone: a natural body signal affecting blood sugar and hunger. Semaglutide medicines (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide medicines (Mounjaro, Zepbound) act like this signal.

As of September 2026, Part D members who qualified for the Bridge could get certain medicines with a $50 payment for a month’s supply. That patient payment is called a copay.

The programme opens on July 1, 2026 and closes on December 31, 2027; its payment is separate from ordinary Part D.

Getting the medicine requires both a prescription and prior approval for payment. You must be at least 18 years old, but age alone does not qualify you. Your doctor needs to check your health conditions, your Medicare drug plan type and your BMI, a measure calculated using your height and weight. Ask the doctor to check these rules with you and ask your plan to confirm its type.

What does that payment leave out?

For covered medicines, Part D limits the amount you pay yourself each year. Your Bridge payments do not count toward that limit, so they are extra costs even if you reach the limit for your Part D medicines.

Discount coupons cannot reduce the Bridge payment. The programme gives members with low incomes no extra help with that patient payment.

For diabetes treatment, Medicare directs people with type 2 diabetes to ordinary Part D; the Bridge does not include them. Other health and plan rules can also rule out the Bridge.

What about a savings card?

In September 2026, semaglutide and tirzepatide copay cards required private or workplace insurance and excluded Medicare and Medicaid members.

A savings card reduces what an eligible insured patient pays. A maker’s cash offer is a price for medicine paid for outside insurance. Some of those cash offers allow Medicare or Medicaid members, even though the savings cards exclude them.
